Operator Gary Mooring has been an outstanding bus operator for MV Transportation since September 2006.
In 2007, he stopped his coach on Highway 80 Westbound driving to El Cerrito Del Norte Bart. He noticed in his mirrors that smoke was coming from his coach and pulled over. Seeing dried brush because of the dry summer, he removed the passenger from the coach to safety and then extinguish the vehicle fire as to keep the brush from catching on fire.
In August 2009, while driving the same commuter bus, he noticed in his mirror that a young woman was getting out of her seat and walking towards the front of the coach. He was about to ask her to sit down when he realized she did not look very well. He asked her to sit in the vacant seat near him and asked her what was wrong. She explained she had heart problems and thought she was having a stroke or heart attack. He immediately called the office and relayed the information, staying in constant communication with the dispatcher and emergency personnel. This occurred during heavy commuter traffic and concerned that the emergency responders would not be able to get there quickly, he decided to continue on his route to the Transportation Center where the ambulance and fire truck were waiting for his route to arrive. Gary stayed calm, made sure she took her heart medicine and had other passengers monitor her condition. They made sure she stayed awake and alert until they got her to the ambulance. If they had stopped and waited for help, due to the heavy traffic behind them, help may not have arrived in time. Gary and the dispatcher's quick responses were responsible for the passenger arriving safely at the Fairfield Transportation Center with the emergency responders waiting to assist.
